Boston Harbour Sunset

This painting was done from a photograph taken during a harbour boat trip.There was a spectacular evening sky and the sailing boats moved liked ghosts against the sound of jets taking off from the main runway at Logan Airport which sticks out into the sea just off the right hand side of the picture.

Stourhead

Pastel on Canson Paper

Stourhead is a National Trust property in the South Western extremity of Wiltshire.

Created in the 1740s by William Hoare, a banker, Stourhead contains a large lake, a Temple of Apollo, a Grotto, a Palladian bridge and many other features. Looking at the sensational views across this garden is exactly like standing in a landscape painting by the French romantic painter, Claude Lorraine.

On the Mud, Burnham on Crouch

Watercolour

The romance of decay. The seaweed, the rotting piles (quick see the doctor!) and the mud. The upside is the play of the shadows across the sand and the reflection in the puddles.

It is a strange fact that rust, rotting wood and dilapidation have tremendous pictorial appeal but we don't tolerate them in real life.

Harbour Steps, Tenby, Pembrokeshire

Watercolour

The backlight on this scene with the deep shadows and the sun catching the lamposts and the water in the foreground made this a very challenging subject to capture.

The secret of emphasising sunlight is to deepen the shadows. In the early stages of the painting, the scene seemed very dull but several applications of shadow later, the sun started to sparkle, particularly on the water.
